The Role
An intense experience, but you really do learn a lot from it. A full time job, especially in an investment bank is not quite what university life prepares you for.
People are really smart and willing to help, but everyone is very busy. You don't get to have many conversations outside work related subjects, but I may have just joined the team at a particularly busy time.
Quite a lot of professional support is offered. The goal is to make you productive as soon as possible and to prepare you for a potential graduate job.
Be prepared to work around 12 hours per day. However, this is not bad for London. I usually get in at around 7.30 - 8 and leave between 6.30 - 8. Some of my colleagues don't leave until 9 though.
Quite a lot of responsibility and although resources, such as knowledgeable people made themselves available, you're mostly managing yourself. It's a good thing as you can do things in your own pace and decide what's important, time spent on a job or getting all of the details right. It would be a mistake, in my opinion to ask your manager or your colleagues every time you hit a road block. You're given as much responsibility as you ask for (within limits) and be prepared to answer for both your best and your worst projects.
Don't really know about my degree, although it certainly makes you see "full time" education with different eyes, but some of the skills developed here are invaluable in any professional environment. Tip: learn some VBA before you get here, or at least be prepared to hit the gound running.
The Company
My other answers should sum this up. One thing to mention is that you're not alone in this, talk about it with other interns and share the best and the worst of your roles.
Investment bank level. People pay attention to the details.
Quite a lot, at least financially, considering that most of our time here is spent learning and no matter how productive an intern might be, you're still an intern, not an industry expert and you only have 10 weeks here. Also, some of the events prepared for us exceeded expectations.
Subsidised Canteen
Sports and Social Club
Financial Bonus
Company Parties/Events
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
Quite appealing. I can't think of any other jobs (reasonable expectiations) that I's rather do.
The Culture
People were friendly.
Lived 25 minutes away from the City of London and socialised mostly around this area. Quite expensive taking into consideration rent, transport, the occasional night out.
Again, the City of London and London as a whole has quite a few interesting places.
Yes, we actually had a very enjoyable volunteering day, organising sporting events for a school in the area and different activities and societies you could join are constantly advertised. If you have time for them, of course.
