The Role
Enjoyed the teams that I worked within, whether this was interns when in the office or Grant Thornton employees when working out on site. I found audit work to be interesting and informative, on the other hand the corporate governance project work did prove to be very monotonous.
Grant Thornton employees seemed appreciative of the work I performed out on site. There were long periods where the public sector audit team who were undertaking the corporate governance review didn't have any contact from Grant Thornton employees. This left me feeling forgotten at times.
There was a clear appraisal / target setting procedure during the internship with your line manager. It was made clear that if there was any support or guidance that was needed in line with the targets or other matters, that your line manager would be free to help. On the other hand I was assigned a buddy (a trainee). I only met him on my first morning in the office and never had any contact with him after that.
Whether in the office or at a client site, there was always more than enough work to keep me busy.
When completing audit work I was tasked with a section of the audit file which was my responsibility to complete. Whilst in the office we were given a list of local governments and NHS organisations on which to complete a review, it was our responsibility as a group of interns to complete as many as we could.
Gained a lot of technical accounting skills, building on modules I have sat at university. I also learnt a lot of 'soft' skills, such as communication, due to working in a professional environment. I also gained a lot during the two day presentation skills training at Bradenham.
The Company
As a group of interns we never sat with our department. This meant we sat on a floor with an unrelated department with whom we never really interacted with.
Graduate recruitment presented us with a schedule of 'lunch and learn' sessions, socials and training at Bradenham at our induction on our first day. As a department, as interns we also received a comprehensive schedule of where we were to be working for the duration of our 6 week internship on our first day in the office.
The trip to Bradenham for two days of training was brilliant, with all travel expenses paid. Grant Thornton also paid all the travel expenses for the interns to take part in a CR day in Birmingham.

A future career with Grant Thornton is very appealing to me after receiving a graduate job offer.
The Culture
Brilliant group of interns. There was always a large proportion of the group attending Grant Thornton social events or even arranged drinks after work.
Prices in and around London were not cheap.
Don't really think you can beat London for night life, was a bit expensive though!
A lot of opportunities to get involved in intern events. Once a full time employee I think there would be a much larger number of opportunities available to you.
