The Role
Every day leaving work with a smile on my face because I am looking forward to the next working day speaks for itself.
Being placed in a small office enabled me to get to know everyone in my division, as well as to work with colleagues from others. Having lunch and going out together made me more acquainted to my colleagues. And a statement 'You should join after graduation!' makes me feel extremely valued and welcomed.
My buddy is of great help. Moreover, he tries to come up with not-boring tasks, so that I would research and find out myself (of course questions are always welcomed). I have to say it works perfectly well, since the more time I spend researching, the more interested I am in Mercer's business. Moreover, other colleagues also keep me engaged and allow me to shadow them, ask whichever questions I have and LEARN!
Honestly, there were days when I was bored, since there was literally nothing to do. However, at those moments also some other employees were quiet, therefore, we took an opportunity and they showed/explained some more features of retirement consulting.
At the beginning, I had a feeling that the employees do not perceive me as of serious help, therefore, they would not give me much responsibility. However, once I had proven to them my knowledge and during this time accumulated skills, they would give me some more responsible work which I was delighted to perform. I think that due to the Peer Review, which every document has to undergo, it enables interns to at least try to deal with more sophisticated queries without making serious mistakes to the clients and that is great!
Actually, this internship determined the direction in which I would like to pursue my career and I do not think there can be anything more valuable than that.
The Company
Again, due to the size of the office, the atmosphere is very helpful and friendly and I think it facilitates effectiveness. Of course, everyone is looking forward to Fridays when it is a dress down day and a little bit more than usual laughter can be heard in the office.
Once I arrived, there were still some technical things to be dealt with, therefore I could not start straight away. And in those moments when I had nothing to do, it would be great if some kind of self-development activities or alike could be arranged.
The Induction Day expenses were fully covered. Cannot think of anything else.
I cannot say yet, but hopefully I have managed to make a good impression on my colleagues and the management. As from my side, I would be delighted to work at Mercer!
The Culture
They were extremely friendly and I am truly enjoying working next to them!
Since it is Northern Ireland, then the cost of living and socializing are more than reasonable. Especially costs of living - you could not wish any cheaper.
There are so many pubs and clubs where to go out that I don't think I would manage to visit all of them even if I went out every night. Luckily, there are colleagues who would show you the best places in the city.
There were a lot of lunches and some dinners organized to attend collectively. Although, I would prefer to be involved in many more if there were.
