The Role
Overall, the internship was enjoyable. It was hard work at points and it felt a bit daunting to begin with but I think this is like starting any new job. I was given graduate-type work and not given the stereotypical intern work to do (ie. make coffee, photocopy etc) and was given some level of responsibility, talking to the client and completing tasks.
Everyone was so welcoming and friendly - from 1st year to partner. I thought I'd be a bit of an annoyance for the people I worked for/with but they totally understood my position and the need for me to ask lots of questions.
As I said before, people understood that I would have lots of questions and they always took the time to explain what I had to do.
Over the 4 weeks, I was on 4 different jobs - during my first 3 weeks, I was kept busy with plenty work to do. During my last week, I was on a job that had went better than expected so they kind of ran out of things for me to do. After a while though, I was given some work to do from other jobs and I actually ended up with too much to do to be able to finish it before I left after my last day.
I was given small sections of the audit to do and it was my responsibility to chase up any information I needed from the client. I wouldn't say I was given total responsibility for a whole section but I felt involved in the audit. Others relied on the work I had done and came back to me to follow up on points left with the client. I would say it was a good level of responsibility - not too much and not too little.
I wouldn't say the skills developed would help to a great extent in my degree studies. The internship did highlight some issues within audit that could be studied further during my degree. I feel having the practical experience will definitely help when studying. The experience will definitely help when applying for jobs - it gave me a real insight into a graduate position at the Big 4 and helped in deciding whether audit was what I wanted to do.
The Company
Everyone was really friendly and were able to have a chat in the office but people still got on with their work.
The induction in Crewe was well organised but I had some issues concerning the length of my internship - was told two different things by graduate recruitment. Overall though, I felt it was organised pretty well but could have been better.
We were given a laptop and access to basically all of the resources available to a regular employee.
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
Company Parties/Events
Above 25 days holiday
The company are a good company to work for and I definitely wouldn't turn down a job offer from them but if I am to be honest, in terms of the big 4, there are aspects of the others that appeal to me more.
The Culture
The social aspect in the evening during the induction was really good even if we were just in the hotel. Withing the department, over the 4 weeks I was there, we had a few lunches out as well as some social events in the evening but as far as I know, nothing more was organised for the interns as a group.
As a city, Glasgow was pretty reasonably priced.
Being Glasgow, there was plenty to choose from.
In terms of the company, the interns were invited to a CSR day plus as a department, there was a summer BBQ at a partner's house as well as other nights out but as far as I know, nothing specific was organised for the interns as a whole group (unlike other companies).
