The Role
The placement was actually more enjoyable than I expected it.
The team did look after me, and tried to make sure I was happy with everything. At points when they had a lot of work going on, or had a deadline looming, I did feel a bit in the way though as I often asked for help or some work if I had finished what I was doing.
I felt I got a good amount of guidance, with support not far away, and always up for helping if a problem arose.
I had days when I had far too much to do, but others when I had almost nothing, but the latter didn't happen very often. More often than not, I had a fairly constant level which left me with enough to do for the day
I had a fair amount, more than I expected! I occassionly had to run a meeting if my line manager had another to go to which was more important.
The skills I used when on my placement were generally ones that I already had, as with my degree we do a fair amount of spreadsheet work. It did help with developing my confidence in those skills though as I was using them every day.
The Company
We did have a good time with the people in the office. I didn't feel left out. The other summer placements also help to make your time more enjoyable; we went out a fair few times.
It was generally really well organized, this year with the recruiting agency changing it did cause problems with security clearance forms going missing, but it was sorted out as soon as they could.
I did go on a course which gave me information which I used in my placement (a Life cycle Management course).
There are a lot of opportunities with BAE.
The Culture
Summer placements do get together a lot and go for drinks/meals
It's alright. Being so close to the Lake District does mean it can be expensive
It's alright, Barrow itself isn't fantastic, I prefer Ulverston (20 mins away) - the pubs are better
Lake district is minutes away, so there is plenty to do... just be prepared to see a lot of rain!
