The Role
It was a really useful experience and definitely worth while. I looked forward to going to work each day.
They could rely on me to fill in when short staffed and made me feel part of the team.
I was given a fair amount of support and we had an intern checklist to work our way through but a lot of the time I had to rely on my own initiative to do things.
Very busy, especially towards the end of the internship when I took on greater responsibilities.
I was given a fair amount, often taking up the role of Sales Floor Manager for a few hours each day
I have felt I have already been able to apply what I have learnt in my degree in a working environment and I hope that the skills I have developed here will definitely assist me in the future.
The Company
Most of the time, the general atmosphere was positive however in any working environment where the amount of activity depends on how many customers come in each day, there were times when it was quite busy and stressful
It was very well organised with various intern training days/networking days which were really useful for getting to know the other interns. There was always someone on hand you could ring if you needed to
The Executive Trainee scheme that one can apply for after university involves a 6 month placement in a retail bank so having had 7 weeks experience in one is definitely a head start in the training. The personal review taken at the end of the internship is also very useful for personal development.
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
There is supposedly quite a high chance of being invited back next summer if you get a good enough review
The Culture
The interns were based in branches around the country so we only got to see each other on organised days therefore we never really got to see each other very much
It was not very much for me personally because they placed me near where I live therefore I could live at home throughout the placement
It was good for me as I was placed in my hometown so could go out with my friends from home
There were not many activities to get involved in with my colleagues at the branch however there were plenty of opportunities with the Graduate Communities Committee to get involved in if you were willing to travel.
