The Role
I really enjoyed my internship as it allowed me to find out more about HSBC as a company and in particular the retail banking sector.
Everyone at the branch was really nice and I was made to feel as being part of the team from my very first day.
My line manager was always available if I needed support and guidance. I had regular reviews with my line manager to assist me during my internship, so I always had a point of contact.
I was given a wide range of activities and tasks to do around the branch on a day to day basis, so for the majority of the time had something to do. When I had any free time, I was able to check my emails and then sometimes just relax and spend time with different members of the branch.
I was given a bit of responsibility during my placement. For example I got to sit down my my line manager and decide on what business project I wanted to undertake during my 7 weeks there. I was also able to choose how I planned my work during the days and the tasks I conducted.
I will be able to use the skills I gained whilst completing my business project in the future at university or in my career when I have to do a project or report. I conducted research and this is also useful as I will be able tio use this skill in future.
The Company
The branch was a fun place to work in. The employees get on so well with each other and everyone was very approachable and friendly. There were also a few work nights organised that allowed everyone to spend time together.
The placement was well organised, with the induction days being the starting point. People were available for support and guidance via email and phone. I had a few IT technical problems during my first week or so but these were soon resolved. Overall, the placement was well set up and organised and the interns felt valued by HSBC.
HSBC were effective in personal training and development. The induction days and the community days allowed the interns from all over the country to meet up and network. We also attended talks from senior figures of the bank which provided us with insight and more knowledge about the company.
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
The graduate schemes within the bank seem very appealing and I am definitely interested in the executive trainee scheme. This would be a great starting point to work myself up the company.
The Culture
There was a very good social scene amongst the interns. Both the first and second year interns got on really well, and organised good social events including nights out during the course of the placement.
I did my placement in Leeds which is my hometown so living costs were not a problem at all for me.
As I am from Leeds originally and this is where I did my placement, I knew the nightlife really well already.
Yes, there was the fundraising for charity, where we able to conduct activities and events to raise money for the chosen charity.
