The Role
Very friendly team helped me to settle in quickly. Had a good range of tasks to complete. Educational materials and regular talks helped me to understand more the inner workings of an Investment Bank.
In my team, it was rewarding to work on projects solving real business requirements.
As a developer working on an alien system, the support of my colleagues was essential to completing my objectives. UBS has a very collaborative atmosphere.
My business objectives kept me interested throughout each day. Talks, community affairs events and social events positively contributed to my overall time at UBS.
I was conscious that my assignments would not have had too great a negative impact should I have failed to accomplish them. However, I feel the balance was about right considering my placement was just 10 weeks.
UBS laid on many lectures to get all the interns up-to-speed with the workings of the bank and common financial knowledge. Everything was explained excellently and I feel that I have a much greater understanding of the financial sector - particularly poignant considering my background is in technology, not finance. In my role as a developer, I was able to learn new concepts and see their applications on a scale far beyond that offered during University. Understanding the development methodologies in practice by my team of ~100 developers was also rewarding.
The Company
Everyone is very helpful and collaborative working is notably commonplace. Numerous events for interns allow for socialising and networking.
The welcome week was flawless with interesting lectures, talks and events. A welcome drinks event at the LSO was a very nice touch. My team had a structure list of possible tasks for me to complete.
Plenty of educational materials are available, including online lectures and free e-books. The welcome week contained very well presented lectures to get all interns up-to-speed with business systems and processes, along with the inner workings of an Investment Bank. My team took the time to teach me the latest software development working practices and technologies.
The internship programme is a fast-track to the graduate training programme. Good performance during an internship should result in an offer for the full-time graduate position.
The Culture
Drinks after work with other interns are common. The are several events laid on that bring all the interns together for socialising and networking. A social welcome and farewell drinks events were laid on by UBS.
My offices were located in the Square Mile of London and my placement coincided with the Olympics... I was already familiar with the generally slightly higher cost of living in the City.
There are many pubs around the offices, but London, as a whole, has plenty to offer! World class bars and clubs aplenty.
Community affairs events meant spending a day helping at a charity. I participated in an inter-team 'Olympic' games, which was very amusing.
