The Role
Overall I have enjoyed the experience and still aspire to join the company, though I have found my project extremely dull.
I get on with my line manager very well though the nature of my project means I have had little opportunity to mix with other team members. I'm very much so working solo. Though I do feel my work will be valued by the team upon completion.
Guidance on my project has been excellent. Guidance through the internship process had been lacking ever so slightly as I am my line managers 1st intern. I have often had to organise meetings myself that he should have been doing (especially in my 1st 2 weeks)
generally worked at a steady pace though the workload seemed to come in pulses thus some days I may have had very little to do and the week after I would be staying late. This is just due to timings of meetings and presentations etc.
I have been responsible for myself and my job but not for anything else. My project is extremely independant thus no-one needed to rely upon my own personal deadlines etc
I have developed both academically and personally. It has definately been a worthwhile experience
The Company
It is a working atmosphere, generally very quiet with a background noise of tapping on keyboards! There were dress down fridays and every thursday staff would take it in turns to bring in cakes for elevens'. This helped make it a very friendly office but office life isn't a party - people are there to get their job done.
I was very well informed and knew where I was supposed to be and what I was supposed to be doing at all times. The only reason I didn't rate it at the very top end is because my project was only outlined to me 3 days after I started. Many other interns here knew what they were doing and had reading sent to them in advance of their placement.
I think they work very hard to ensure you get as much as possible out of you during your internship. Alot of interns feel a sense of loyalty to the company even after a few weeks, proving the investemnt is working!

Petrophysicists are in demand and my appraisal went very well. I am still waiting on my assesment centre to see if I will get a job offer. Though it looks promising we are still in a recession and BP are repostedly struggling to pay their pensions! So I definately feel more pressure because of the market.
The Culture
Some weeknds have been quiet as people have been off visiting family etc but we have had several flat parties/ social events that have been really fun!
A good night out can be up to £20 in taxi's and another £20-30 on the actual night out ... but unlike when being a student we only go out once a week so its ok. Living is expensive (£105 a week) however BP subsidise accommodation if working in the south-east which is great. It works out at about £40 housing allowance per week.
If you a prepared to pay for taxis to nearby towns its great, though the town we are staying in is rubbish
The company gym and associated sports clubs provide lots of clubs for staff. The interns also organised tennis and squash leagues.
