The Role
Very good experience on the whole, meeting a lot of people across the bank and a steep learning curve.
My colleagues were very friendly and always took time aside to explain tasks and projects to me, usually attempting to set me interesting work I could learn from rather than mundane tasks.
My line manager supported me through the whole programme and checked my progress every day.
Generally the workload was reasonable, although it seemed to increase exponentially with it being extremely quiet in the beginning and fairly stressful towards the end.
I was happy with the responsibility I was given in tasks and was also set my individual intern project to take responsibility for throughout. I was asked to lead some meetings and write a research report for the team.
My technical ability, soft skills, relationship management and project management skills were all significantly enhanced throughout the internship.
The Company
My team was very social and the atmosphere was generally not too serious with people joking around quite often. However, everyone worked hard and leaving the office quite late was normal.
The internship was very well organised and all events were already scheduled from the start. The only issue was that interns didn't find out desk allocations until the first day and also did not get a choice preference.
Extremely valuable week-long training programme at the start with a lot of personal development support throughout.
Sports and Social Club
Company Parties/Events
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
Working from home
There is room to take all of the intern class onto the graduate programme and decisions are made on performance alone which is very encouraging.
The Culture
Interns have weekly opportunities to network with each other at events and a Go-Karting social also took place.
Expensive accommodation and living costs in Canary Wharf / London, but this is expected.
Good selection of bars and clubs.
There are many opportunities to get involved with sport or societies at HSBC and everything seems very welcoming. There were a couple of adverts asking for cricket / football players for inter-bank games.
