The Role
A wonderful experience - I initially applied for a summer internship but now I think changing it to work placement was a best decision ever.
I was supported not only by my buddy and my mentor - my manager and team members were of great help too. From knowledge sharing meetings (I had a chance to share mine too!) to Pot Luck lunches - I felt like I belonged there.
I had a mentor assigned - she would help me with personal/career development. We met once a month for coffee. I also had a buddy - a team member. I could ask him anything about project related things. My manager was very helpful too. We met once a week when we would discuss my progress and he would give some guidance. There was always someone I could ask for help.
The workload varied but I was never bored. I had time to grab a coffee and have an hour for lunch. There were times when I had to work longer, or log in from home to check on something, I could also work from home. There's lots of flexibility, but it's important to stay focused on work and try your best to always deliver on time.
A lot! I was quite surprised by that, in a positive way. I learned so much!
In my last month of the placement I started thinking of my final year project - the university starts in September but I already know what my project is going to be. Also, the modules I selected are linked to what I learned during my placement - I found the topics really interesting and I want to learn more.
The Company
The office was quiet, not much fun, but we're talking about Developers in an investment bank so no surprise there. We would however go for drinks every Thursday, organise lunches or similar activities so we had plenty of opportunities to socialise.
Apart from every day job there were quite a few work placement projects organised. It gave us opportunity to learn about other departments and meet people from different backgrounds, with different experience. All projects and reviews had deadlines, we were always informed about everything on time.
I took a few training classes at the beginning, then I signed up for some additional events. I could also use online material as much as I wanted. I learned A LOT.
Company Parties/Events
Working from home
Will find out in September - keeping my fingers crossed!
The Culture
There was always some interns meeting up after work.
It's London, City, quite expensive, but with the pay we received it was not much of an issue.
Plenty of clubs, pubs, restaurants. Some very posh, some regular.
Lots of networks we could join. I joined Women's Network myself.
