The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed my internship with Deloitte. I found that the staff were really helpful and open to questions throughout the internship and the level of responsibility I was given made me feel like a valued member of the team. The work I did was varied as I was given the opportunity to go out on site to three clients, as well as have a chance to see what some of the work is like in the office.
Even before I began my internship I was invited to attend team socials and the end of year work do! This was great as it meant I had met all of my colleagues before even joining and I didn't then feel like a bit of an outsider during my placement. I also played 5-a-side football with my colleagues, both before the start of the placement and during. Colleagues were supportive and helpful throughout the placement, answering any questions I had even if it was a question I had asked previously where I hadn't understood the answer.
I received feedback from management for each job I did which helped me to improve on the following work. I was set objectives at the start of the internship which gave me clear focus throughout and gave me clear evidence of what I had done for the partner interview.
For the first day or so, I shadowed the colleague I was working with but after this I was given work that a graduate would be undertaking. If there was any time where I had run out of work to do (which was quite rare as my whole internship seemed very well organised to keep me busy!), I had a project to prepare for which was on the final day of the internship. This was a presentation based on what I had learnt and my experiences during the placement.
I was very impressed with the level of responsibility I was given. I was never sent to do the photocopying or make the coffee! The work I was doing had a clear impact on the job for whichever client we were working on which was great as it meant I was able to see what it would be like to work at Deloitte as a graduate.
As a Physics student the internship may not directly apply to my studies, but I feel that the attitude to work I have developed during my time here can only help me to achieve in my degree. Beyond that, I think the insight I have gained into a working environment like Deloitte's has been very beneficial to me as I now know what to expect as a graduate.
The Company
Overall the atmosphere in the office was geared towards working. That said however, there was no problem with colleagues taking a break from their work for a chat, especially as the Olympics were ongoing during my placement! I thought that the balance between working and having a bit of banter was good.
Very well organised, I felt that a lot of people had taken a lot of time to ensure that the placement was run smoothly and that interns got the most of the placement they could.
I received training with all of the other interns from the regional offices for 4 days at the Belfry Hotel which covered report writing, interviewing clients, teamwork, presentations and how to approach problems from a business sense. On top of this, I received training relevant to the service line I worked in
Company Parties/Events
Hopefully very good! I fully intend to join as a graduate should I be offered the job.
The Culture
Socials were organised by Deloitte and we went for drinks after work on an ad hoc basis.
Manchester is a fairly well priced city, the Manchester office is located next to Spinningfields which is a more upmarket area, but even so I felt the cost of living and socialising was good.
Manchester is a decent night out, there are plenty of bars and clubs around!
There were team socials every month which were good fun as well as lots of opportunities to get involved in sport outside of work, such as football, badminton and golf. I played football and golf a few times with colleagues outside of work which I found helpful to get to know them a bit better which then made my experience in work better.
