The Role
Very good way to spend some of the summer.
Very much so, everyone is always very grateful for work completed.
Both supervisor and buddy were easily approachable and very helpful when needed. Everyone in the team encouraged me to ask questions and I felt confident asking anyone.
Because of the nature of work sometimes there was not really much to do. We were given a project to work on which helped with this. People in the team would make an effort to find something for me to do at quiet times.
For an intern I felt I had a good amount of responsibility. Any client work was obviously checked, but that's the standard case for other full time employees too.
In depth training in excel which will certainly help with any actuarial career. The actuarial training should help with the last year of my Economics and Actuarial Science degree.
The Company
Very chilled out with a good mix of work, general chat and competitions / challenges etc. The free ice cream and 'Bake off' competitions were a bonus!
Overall very well. Consisted of a welcome / induction day with interns from every Mercer office with general introductions and some in depth excel training. The 2nd day was introductions to your team and local office, with a meal out with the team (on Mercer!). The buddy system was great - always being sat next to someone willing to take your questions and help with any problems.
The only official training was the intense excel course on the first day. However after that team members / management were all willing to sit down and talk me through every piece of work and encouraged questions.

Not sure when we will find out, but it seems to be fairly common for interns to receive a full time offer. Many full time colleagues had completed an internship previously and rejoined full time.
The Culture
As interns we arranged things most weeks, including drinks after work, meals, nights out, London events (the Shard opening show, Olympic torch arriving at the tower etc). Had lunch with fellow interns almost every day. Mercer put on welcome drinks for us (and contributed to the tab!), as well as arranging drinks to celebrate the release of actuarial results. We were taken for a team 'welcome lunch' at the start, had a softball tournament with colleagues and a 'summer party' consisting of food and more drinks!
London is always going to be expensive, but Mercer often contributed to the tab, and full time colleagues rarely let interns buy a round which was very nice of them!
It's London so always plenty of choice!
Yes, events arranged by Mercer as well as those arranged amongst us interns / colleagues.
