The Role
I found the work interesting and diverse. It gave me a good idea of what it would be like to work in a City law firm.
My colleagues very quickly made me feel part of the team and included me not only in their work but also in their social activities.
There was clear open door policy which enabled me to discuss any queries with my supervisors who always made sure I was well informed. They often inquired as to how I was getting on with my work which was really reassuring.
I was given quite a lot of work to do but everyone was working hard in my department so I felt even more included in the team. And since I found the work very satisfying, I didn't mind having extra work to do.
I was given a great diversity of work and had much more responsibility than I had expected considering I was only there for three weeks as a summer clerk.
The internship gave me a great insight into the law which was rather new to me as I had studied a non-law subject previously. The experience made me realize that the law was the right profession for me.
The Company
Everyone I met was professional and serious about their work but also friendly and helpful. The atmosphere was one of the best aspects of the firm.
The placement was very well organised and we were given right form the start a timetable with the schedule for the three weeks of our internship.
The firm invested time and money to ensure we were equipped to tackle the tasks that they set before us (e.g. IT training, client pitches, research skills, public speaking etc).
Subsidised Canteen
Company Parties/Events
Bakers organised a range of presentations on the various departments and our future prospects within the firm. It was clear from all this that Bakers has a very transparent system where promotion facilities are accessible to all who are committed and hardworking.
The Culture
The social scene was great. All summer clerks formed an tight-knit group. Most of us will be joining the firm and we are all still in touch.
I lived at home but generally found the cost of living and socialising in London is high.
London has a lot to offer and there were several nice bars and pubs near the office.
Bakers organised many events and trips for their summer clerks including cooking classes, theatre trips, cocktail making etc
