The Role
I worked within Lombard which is the capex funding arm of the RBS. Thoroughly enjoyed working here and found the people extremely supportive.
My colleagues were very responsive to any requests I had - whether that be a request to go out on a customer visit or a request to sit down and chat about an issue for 10 minutes
Line manager had the perfect level of being at arms length but also fully invovled with my progress during the internship Ditto my graduate buddy whose support was second to none.
There were busy days and not so busy days. The environment at Lombard is such that you have to be proactive in building personal contacts in order to facilitate join meetings with customers etc.
Responsibility increased towards the end of the internship, though I feel it could have been put upon me earlier. Nevertheless, I suspect that if I were to have asked for more responsibility then that would have been forthcoming
Communication skills in a professional business environment have improved considerably. Furthermore, my ability to make sales-oriented phone calls has improved
The Company
Not a day went by when I felt the atmosphere wasn't constructive. Plenty of 'banter'
My line manager was on holiday when I arrived and then my graduate buddy went on holiday mid-internship. Although this wasn't too much of a problem I suspect it is something which should be factored out in the future
I was highly valued and my project will be used in future prospecting efforts
Financial Bonus
Company Parties/Events
RBS are very keen to invest in their interns and the graduate schemes are strong on encouraging experience across the bank
The Culture
Very good socially-orientated week-long induction in London plus further planned social events
I'm pretty sure Genesis shoudl have read: 'On the sixth day God created MANchester!' Great city, cheap beer, reasonable restaurants
Northern quarter, smart and chic bars, world-class gay village. Brilliant
There was an opportunity to get invovled in a sports day along with interns from the Corporate section of the bank. However, not a great deal of opportunities outside 9-5.
