The Role
I really enjoyed the experience. It was a real eye-opener in term of life at a large firm such as BAE. The placement gave me a real isnight into a life as an architecture empoyee at BAE
My fellows employees were great, they made me feel right at home. I was obviously the youngest and most inexperianced person on the team, but they never let this affect the level of work given to me which was great and meant i gained broader experiance.
Support and guidance was good from the people that set up the placement (i.e. manager) however not so great from my line manager in the department
Some days work was limited due to security clearance not being ready in time. Most of the time there was work to be done though.
For some tasks there was a fair amount of responsibilty but not all. This is understandable as some project were highly important to the firm and it would just be foolish to leave it n the hands of an intern!
I learnt alot over the summer but i dont think it will really help from a university point of view. Although, when it comes to interviews I have a great CV and lots to talk about.
The Company
No one really talked to each other in the office - even at lunch! I was lucky enough to have another summer placement in the same office though so that was alright
Only bad thing would be the fact the security clearence wasn't set up properly. It got left til last minute and I ended up starting a week later that I was meant to because of it. That was annoying because it cost me an extra week's rent.
Quite alot of time was put into showing me how to do various calculations/work different computer programs etc.
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
I would definately consider coming back to Bae for a summer placement and the graduate scheme looks great.
The Culture
Summer placement organised regular night outs etc. and I was even invited to a few department nights out.
Rent was pretty cheap (compared to living in the city anyway) but i thought it was quite expensive in pubs etc.
Nights out with the summer placements were pretty good. But i guess it just depends on the students you end up with on the placement.
There was quite a few summer placement nights out arranged, a few department nights out and the grads arranged some paintballing sessions. Apart from that I think I spent quite alot of money just getting out of Barrow during the weekends.
