The Role
Hard work & long hours yet a very rewarding experience.
This obviously vary's between desk rotations (ie: non-trading desks will tend to have more time to talk to you) but in general I have felt valued and appreciated by my colleagues.
The support was comprehensive. You are given a junior buddy whom you can ask more trivial questions which you may not want to bug your manager with. Your buddy may or may not be on your desk. Once prompted, my managers were happy to give me feedback about where I have been successful and where I could improve. The HR team have also been on hand to answer any non-tecnhical questions I had. In all, very good support.
Again depending on your desk rotation. For sales/trading desks most of the time you will be shadowing(so just watching or listening in to phone calls with clients). Time is also taken up by guest speakers, preparing stocks to pitch for the equity trading competition and any desk projects you may be set. Sometimes, you have to be proactive in getting work but this is to be expected.
Interns are not FSA approved so cannot speak to clients directly. Towards the end of the internship, once your knowledge of the markets is improved, people seem more willing to trust you with more important tasks. Ultimatly though, real responsibility is limited by the nature of the job.
Regardless of whether you succeed in gaining the full time offer, the skills learnt are invaluable. Market knowledge, presenting confidently to large and small audiences and more technical excel skills are just some of the things I have learnt...
The Company
Trading floor stereotype. Buzzing and always something going on. The atmosphere of people hard at work yet willing to have banter too. (Although probably not with you).
We were always given clear warning for upcoming events. The Olympics limited our volunteering opportunities over the period yet all in all, well organised. Any confusion, a quick email to HR provided clarity.
Citi gave the impression it was investing heavily in its interns. We were certainly made to feel like an important part in the future success of the firm.
Subsidised/Company Gym
Awaiting result & feedback.
The Culture
Good group of lads and ladies. Often out to the bars around canary wharf after work and clubbing on a friday (or midweek for some). Colleagues also up for the social. Work hard. play hard.
Expensive. To be expected. Good salary compensates for this.
Great for socialising after work. Not so great for clubbing but central london only a few stops away on the underground.
I volunteered at a community church for the day with 20 other interns. Helped the local community whilst giving us a nice change of scenary from the office. We also had an activity day during the first rotation. Large bar tab provided at the end of the day as well.
