The Role
Overall, I enjoyed my placement. I have learnt useful skills, done some interesting pieces of work, and enjoyed the social side of the company.
Everyone is very friendly and helpful. I was doing real work for the company which made my contribution feel useful. I enjoyed getting involved with the football team at Metaswitch!
I had an excellent mentor, who was very patient with me and extremely helpful. My manager was able to offer me lots of good advice. There was plenty of help available but I was always encouraged to try and work things out for myself too.
I always had work to do, but I didn't often feel overloaded.
I was given lots of responsibility during my placement. The code I was writing will be delivered to customers, so it was important to get it right. I also had to manage my time effectively and work towards deadlines.
I learnt two computer programming languages, C and Perl, which are be useful for me to know for a variety of different career paths.
The Company
The office is generally pretty quiet.
The organisation was very good. There was a clear plan of what I was going to do during my time, and my tasks were broken down into small manageable pieces.
I was given enough time to learn C at the beginning of the placement. I always had meetings with my mentor to discuss the things I was learning and to ask any questions I needed to.
Sports and Social Club
Company Parties/Events
Metaswitch is a very friendly place to work. The salary and promotion opportunities within the organisation are good as well.
The Culture
I didn't get to know very many of my fellow placement students as they were living in a house together but I commuted from home. However, of the small number I met, I found some people I liked. My colleagues were very friendly, and I got to know lots of people through playing football.
I commuted from home which was expensive. The costs of socialising are also quite high, although not as expensive as in central London.
I don't know.
Yes. There are lots of sports clubs and societies to get involved in and also lots of opportunities to go to the pub!
