The Role
Had a pretty miserable summer. If you enjoy sifting through excel spreadhseets all day till midnight and dealing with a ridiculous hierarchy then this is the place for you. But if that is the case I pity you. However salary is very, very (read crazy) generous
Everyone at the junior levels was always very friendly and helpful. Seniors can be dismissive but never unpleasant
My direct linemanager spoke to me once. However didn't really matter as I always able to find plenty of work from others, and join projects with managers that did give me a lot of support. So kind of luck of the draw I guess
Both bored and too busy. Everything you hear about IB is true, you will basically live at the office, however half time it's not even due to work. I was told I shouldn't be leaving the office before 11 ever, regardless of workload. I have no problem working long hours but it removes any motivation when you know you can't leave early regardless of how efficiently you work etc.
I was working on live deals as part of the team etc. and given the same responsibility as any of the full time analysts so no complaints. In the bank there is a ridiculously strict hierarchy, so it was depressing seeing your opinions on projects simply being ignored sometimes by those higher up but this is something I think everyone working there experiences regardless of level
Quite useful practising filtering out the important information from company reports etc. But its pretty basic work to be fair I didn't do any maths, excel modelling or economics etc. that I hadn't done before in more detail.
The Company
Have you ever seen film "up in the air"? if not go watch the trailer, seriously my office floor was like that basically empty from all the redundancies they have been making with just small pockets of workers who remain. Was spooky. However my team was nice and we did go for coffee etc. every now and then and good banter.
Everything worked fine except for a relocation payment not being made till 4 weeks after we started (which kind of defeated the point)
Salary is very generous, they did organise speaker series etc. But the emphasis is always very clearly on you impressing them, not the other way round
Subsidised/Company Gym
Company Parties/Events
Regardless of salary, I wouldn't go back, you simply can't have a good quality of life with the hours required, and the work is mind numbing as hell, spending 18 hours without having to think once is soul destroying. Also the industry is still obviously in trouble Citi has been laying off people left right and centre so I certainly don't consider it an attractive prospect for the short to medium term.
The Culture
Went for drinks every friday some networking events arranged for us, can't complain
Canary wharf is expensive but you are paid more than enough to make up for this. Plus there are lots of good restraunts etc. and lovely parks (without were showing the olympics for half the time I was there) so I found it a really nice area to work in
I wouldn't recommend clubbing in Canary wharf expensive and full of the "bag a banker" crowd, but easy enough to get into central london
There was mention of a intercompany 5 aside league but it never happened while I was there anyway
