The Role
The work was generally interesting and challenging, although the novelty of an office environment quickly wears off.
My colleagues always made time to go through anything I didn't understand and show me new things.
The mmanagers/supervisors checked regularly that I had work to do, that I knew what I was doing and if I had any other avenues I would like to explore.
The internship started slowly and I had relatively little work I could get on with for a few weeks. In the later weeks however I had about the right amount, my days were busy but the hours never got ridiculous.
I felt I had genuine responsibility, I would send daily reports/commentaries on my particular business area which would go to several other teams. Whilst there was always someone on hand if something went wrong, I felt this was a genuine contribution.
I have a new found appreciation for how important a good knowledge of computers is in the workplace, particularly (in this case) Excel skills and some basic programming. I have had chance to improve my knowledge of both and while these may not help my degree, they should help in later life.
The Company
The atmosphere was quite serious, as you would expect, but was fun from time to time as well. The amount of communication required means you get to know your colleagues quickly.
The introductory 2 days are really helpful to get everyone together and give everyone a good grounding. Following this you move to your desk, at which point an IT error prevented me from working on certain aspects for almost 2 weeks which was an inconvenience but very much a one-off. After that, I had regular tasks to carry out whilst working on other projects simultaneously.
Regular groups tasks were set for the interns and a range of speakers from the business made time to give talks about their areas. This gave a good chance to mix and display your skills.
Subsidised Canteen
Company Parties/Events
I would be interested should I receive an offer.
The Culture
The other interns were really friendly and went out on a regular basis.
Living in the City is a bit ambitious, but toher parts of London are (relatively) reasonable. Bars are expensive, but not prohibitively so.
There are a good range of bars, clubs etc quite nearby, if not in the City in other areas of Central London.
Work drinks were a regular occurrence and really well attended. 5-a-side was arranged sporadically, so there was some team activity outside of work.
