The Role
Tasks were varied, challenging and engaging. The internship was well organised and everyone was really friendly.
Everyone was friendly and always made time to answer my questions and explain things to me (even when they were busy). I was invited to the weekly commercial meeting as well as to their training days and after work drinks.
Because of the nature of the role I was out of the office working on client sites most of the time so didn't have a lot of contact with my manager. However he would always answer my questions promptly by email and telphone. I was also encouraged to set objectives and get feedback from my colleagues for each of the clients I was working on. My manager then arranged a meeting mid-way through to discuss how I was performing against these objectives and the feedback my colleagues had given me.
The in-charge accountant for each job always made a big effort to find work which I could do. I found the best approach was to always ask for work and then ask questions if you didn't understand. This is because everyone I worked with from first year trainees to partners always made time to explain things to me.
After the work was set I was left to get on with by myself and was sometimes left by myself with the client.
Attended a presentation skills course at Bradenham Manor (Grant Thornton's national training centre), which was excellent. But also teamwork and I feel I'll be a lot better organised for my final year at university and won't always leave assignments to last minute any more.
The Company
Open plan offices, plenty going on (Dress down days, nearly always cake in the kitchen!). However, I was only in the office a few days because my role involves me working from client offices.
National induction day at the start to meet other interns from your region. Was given everything I needed to do my job and really contribute to the team (i.e. laptop, email account, security pass). Was working on a different client every week and also had the opportunity to work in different departments.
Two day course at Bradenham, plently of training available on the intranet and everyone was always willing to answer my questions.
National Travel
Company Parties/Events
Got offered a graduate position on my penultimate day and signed my contract straight away.
The Culture
There was only one other intern in the office and we were always working on different jobs. More difficult because I don't live in Bristol. However, I had a great time time at Bradenham where meeting all of the other interns was definitely a highlight.
I lived at home and trainfares in the Southwest are reasonable. I payed £6.65 for a day return from my hometown to Bristol and if it cost me more to get to a client site I could claim this back.
Bristol is awesome (possibly one of the best cities in the UK).
There was some stuff going on, but because I lived at home I was quite busy already.
