The Role
I really enjoyed the relaxed feeling in the company, everyone is really kind and helpful. There are some times when you feel like you have to do a lot of presentations, but it soon passes. By the end of the first month your expected to be on your own two feet, working well by yourself, but your project manager/line manger are always available.
Due to the nature of the company it is clear they see summer placement students regularly. The team was great and saw a gap in the market for engineers but sometimes you do feel like your just there for the summer.
Anything I needed I always had somebody to ask! It is a good idea for the first month to learn what everyone else is doing, make friends with them as the day goes a lot faster if you are not working against them.
I was busy on a daily basis, other interns had weeks where they have finished everything and had nothing to do for long periods of time.
I was on a real project, although the projects set are often foundation projects for further studies the projects are important. When you are working interdependently you can work effectively at your own pace, but how productive you are is reflected in your overall placement review so be aware of this!
I feel this one is a hard one to answer as the studies area I was working on is not really improved by my personal project. If you are determined to do a placement directly related to your studies, the National Grid probably is not the best placement as the projects are very in depth, too in depth for university. However I learnt a lot about the whole electrical system, which is why I have rated this an 8.
The Company
There are very different teams in the National Grid but certainly an age gap between graduating and retiring, depending on the team. The atmosphere was relaxing
Some human resource issues with computers, but the place was set up well. Be aware the background checks and drugs testing is invasive and takes a long period of time to complete.
I have learnt a lot and performed a lot.
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
Subsidised/Company Gym
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
Healthcare from home
Unfortunately the company work too slowly in some areas for my liking. The overall feeling is that this company is superb to end your career in but not start it in.
The Culture
Some of the Power Academy lot had a lot of fun, summer interns get more mixed in with real working people, which is good and bad.
I lived in Coventry and commuted. Over the summer the accommodation is £85 a week all bills and around £4 a day in petrol. You must car share to be allowed National Grid car parking space.
Coventry is not very exciting, a lot of Shisha bars but very little fun from my perspective.
I did not receive many out of work invites, this might have been partially as most people drove in as the house prices in Warwick are very high, leaving long commutes for a lot of people in the area.
