The Role
Over-all it was a really good experience. The hours are long but are reasonable for an IB internship. The flat structure means you get great exposure to management (I sat beside my manager). There is a great social aspect to the work and the team tend to finish early and go for drinks on a Friday which is a great way to know your team.
The team were great and were always very supportive
It's Investment Banking so expect late nights
Owing to the flat structure, Macquarie is great for giving junior employees a lot of responsibility. There is a lot of expectation on you to perform. This can seem daunting but they expect you to make mistakes as an intern as long as you learn from them and don't make the same mistake twice.
Investment Banking is a specialised job, you spend a lot of time on PowerPoint and Excel, skills that aren't necessarily transferable. However you do build up your work ethic and attention to detail, skills that are easily transferable into all aspects of your life.
The Company
Team was really lively and everyone got along well. There was quite a bit of team banter.
Intern social events were set up which was good because once you start working its easy to not your peers again. Regular talks were set up for the interns involving senior management from the various divisions so we got a good view of what the overall company was about.
Very good job prospects after the internship
The Culture
London is expensive
Some good bars in the area which have decent offers on
You work long hours in IB so your probably going to have to pass up on some activities
