    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The experiences have been very useful, the work (though at times insufficient) was usually interesting and the people were very happy to help me gain a wider understanding of the company. I didn't always have enough work and so ocassionally had a boring day. Working hours were very flexible. The social side of living with 60 other R-R interns was excellent.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Always helpful and willing to talk to interns across the business, seemed to recognise and value my contribution during my time here. Weren't always able to offer me work when my manager was absent.

    4/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My manager always had time for me to discuss areas of the business I'd like to visit or know more about. My objectives set at the start of my time here were fair, interesting and useful.

    3/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Not enough work to last me the ten weeks I was here but could've asked for more - instead used the time finding out about other parts of the business which was useful. On slow days I was allowed to and had no qualms about leacing early and doing the hours at a later date.

    3/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Allowed to work alone in the lab and decide completely how I was to carry out my tasks. Could complete obejctives on my own or ask for assistance whihc was provided if need be.

    4/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The skills will be of more use in the real world after uni than during my Engineering degree at uni, such as lab abnd people skills. Did learn a bit about aero engines which may tie in to Thermo or Fluid lecture courses as well as being impressive general knowledge, and useful were I to come back to the company.

    4/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Quiet as in a small office of 4-7 people, ocassionally alone when others were working in the lab. Usually had people to talk to if I'd wanted to, and often did ahve chats while working. Invited to the pub with team most weeks and enjoyed my visits there.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Pre-placement paperwork was easy, recommended housing was great, support network was in place if I'd needed it and they responded to suggestions I made to organise events to meet recent graduates.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Only because I didn't need much training though I'm sure I would've been given any training I needed. HR paid for a football tournament for all the interns. I would've liked to have received an R-R polo shirt though, to fit in.

    3/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Subsidised Canteen

    Sports and Social Club

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    Staff Sales/Staff Shop

    Above 25 days holiday

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Expecting an offer to return next summer with the intention of secruign a grad job if I want it. HR gently reminded me throughout my time ot consider whether I'd like to return here.

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Superb. 60 interns living in halls had an absolute blast.

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • The uni halls we stayed at were expensive for what we got (a self-catered room for £85 a week) but there were good quality and Derby was a faily good cost place to socialise, with a fair bit on.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • A few good places in Derby - Flaming Monkey, Revolution and Walkabout - all offered decent prices and spaces to dance and drink. Not the busiest apart from Friday or Saturday nights but with a decent dized group it didn't matter too much.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Gym and sports hall available at reasonable cost as well as sports teams, 'family' days at work, intern/grad organised (and subsidised) events like waterkiing, pub quizzes, bar crawls...

    4/5
