The Role
It's a fast paced and truly engaging industry, with a friendly office and continually challenging.
I felt like a member of staff as I was given appropiate tasks to do and not just given menial tasks for the 10 weeks.
My manager was 100% supportive and organised my schedule prior to my internship so I had structured learning in place. In BlackRock you are also given a mentor and a buddy who provide differnt levels of support/advice
It varied day to day, as I did rotations within different teams while I was doing my internship.
I feel that I was given tasks which had urgent deadlines with varying levels of difficulty and also tasks which took the entire length of my internship.
I think my time management & organisational skills have increased as you learn what to prioritse and also gained an insight to what goes on behind the 'numbers'.
The Company
It was a friendly office, quite quiet at times, but this was expected. Everyone in the office was happy to help with any questions or queries I might have. the hours were sociable as you didn't feel obliged to stay late, however, many people do.
Being based in Edinburgh there was a different experience to being based in London as there only were 5 of us, so there were other social events orgainsed with the grads and also private speaker series which was beneficial.
I feel as if BlackRock invested largely in my developement and was trained up on certain systems that they used and I was also introduced to senior management within the business.

Hopefully the prospects of gaining a place on the graduate scheme are fairly good, as the internship is seen as a '10 week interview'.
The Culture
I had some good nights out with my team and a couple with the other Edinburgh interns.
Edinburgh isn't cheap in comparison with other Scottish cities, as the average rent per month is £350. Socialising is pretty cheap as there are many student bars.
The nightlife in Edinburgh is great, and for the summer internship particularly the month of August as the festival took place so the pubs/clubs are open all night.
There were a few speaker series nights arranged for us and some trips outside of work, however, the majority was just impromtu social occasions.
