The Role
I liked the work did as it was similar to some aspects of my degree that I enjoyed.
I was always given real work to do from my colleges and boss. It never felt as if I was an intern; I always felt more like a full time employee.
There was never a question I couldn't ask. Many of the tasks I conducted were new to me; I was advised to seek advice from specialist of that specifics tasks area. This would sometimes require me to make a call to the New York office.
Although I was busy with work for the majority of the internship, my time was dependent on what was happening during that week. The portfolio challenge could take up a lot of my time and ongoing personal projects would also require me to stay somewhat later than usual. On a whole the work required to be completed was realistic and allowed me to truly understand what my department was really about.
I believe how much responsibility you are given is dependent on how well you complete tasks assigned to you. While I was making comments during global conference calls and asked for my input on numerous occasions, others were shy and reserved. As I felt more confident in the role I was given more responsibility. This then branched out to interacting with other teams and enabled me to network more efficiently.
Even if you do a degree in Finance you will have little knowledge of what happens inside a financial firm. Getting hands on with product data and hearing all the specialist words that are used on a daily basis, allowed me to really understand what happens in finance. This has ultimately allowed me to decide if the finical services are truly where I desire to work.
The Company
A good mix between serious and fun.
Some aspects could have been done better, howver the internship on a whole was well organised
From the get go BlackRock showed an interest in me as an individual, thus they were keen to show me how things worked with in their business process and MD and Directors were willing to have 1 on 1 meetings with interns if asked for. Also during the first few weeks, many freebies were given away.

The Culture
The other interns were always willing to meet up after hours of a drink and we even organised our own events while working.
London is expensive but has many bars, clubs and pubs to go to. There is always something to do!
The nightlife was good but expensive.
If you wanted to do something after work, London cater to your every needed....... As long as you have the money to participate.
