The Role
The work experience was varied and yet enabled me to have continued access to an ongoing project where i had a lot of responsibility.
The Deutsche Bank art staff made me feel appreciated and made useful comments for the work i produced. I soon felt like a permanent member of the team and was given responsibility with tasks like attending meetings, carrying out different jobs and organising a vital aspect of the project. I was often invited out for lunch and other staff from different departments made a point of talking to me to make me feel welcome in the office.
When i felt i needed any help with a problem i had come across my supervisor was always ready to help and when she wasn't available another member of the team would readily offer their advice.
In meetings i would be given tasks to carry out for the next couple of days then report back on at the following meeting. I would be soon finishing one task when another task would be given. This worked well as a balance of busy and not too busy although meant i had to develop skills in dovetailing tasks and flexibility for completion as sometimes deadlines would change
I was given heavy responsibility for a certain project and minor roles in other aspects of the department. But this did not feel like too much, it just made me feel that instead of being an just the intern i was valued and that my work counted.
The work experience has greatly shaped my opinion of where i want to be after my degree. I know that i want to work within a large business, within a more corporate area of art over the tourist related art career options. I developed my organisations skills, my creativity, my project management skills all of which will hugely impact my future career and degree
The Company
There would be days of none stop chatter, and laughter, and then days of silence when deadlines were approaching, but in general the atmosphere was fun and fairly relaxed for an office enviroment
It was the first internship they had had for a while, and not a regular position but considering this the overall organisation of the placement was very good.
The personal training was limited but the my personal development through doing the placement was good.
Company Parties/Events
I would love to have a job working with DB again, but unfortunately the department i worked in was small and do not have any job spaces currently.
The Culture
There were no other placement students in my department that i could socialise with but the permanent employees were all very accomodating
Lunches and travel were all very expensive unless you pre-booked or looked around for a cheap place.
I didn't go out during the placement due to the early mornings and travel time to get home lead to late nights
Numerous art shows and lectures related to current exhibitions around london. The art department is a huge part of the DB vision and i was allowed private tours of exhibitions and to even handle works by damien hirst as part of the day-to-day activities which is an opportunity in itself.
