The Role
The intern class was big but every one was really friendly, and you get stuck into actual work from the very first day, it's all really fast learning but fun.
For the smaller teams, everyone is quite close, and really welcoming. My first team used to buy cakes every Friday to share. When I moved to another team, I'd only been there a couple days and they were always inviting me out for lunch and drinks. They were so helpful when I got stuck with my work too!
There was less guidance as my project was more about what I thought and more independent work. I had more responsibility which was good as it meant you could get on with it at your own pace, and be responsible for your own deadlines. This way you can show a variety of skills in how you handle your time and manage your work. Obviously, support was there if you really needed it!
As I was mostly working on projects, it meant that I could get bored of working on the same thing all the time, so it was good that I had other day to day activities to work on. When I worked in Infrastructure IT, the work was not as demanding. When I was in Equities Research IT, the workload was the same but there were more deadlines so I had to manage my time more efficiently.
A lot of responsibility was left with my project and I had to do presentations on my work on my own.
A lot of confidence as I had to talk to a lot of people that I had never met before. I used skills which I had learnt from university and was able to apply to my job and it also improved my maths that I had learnt at uni also.
The Company
It wasn't hectic, you were able to stop and have a chat now and again, just so you weren't bored! Canteen right upstairs with a lovely coffee shop where you could chill out for 10-15 minutes.
Graduate recruitment were so well organized. Made sure that everyone was happy with their placements, and organised plenty of socials for everyone as well as training sessions.
Training sessions in all areas of the bank, and training specific to the department that you worked in as well. Online training also provided. Managers organised lots of shadowing with traders, analysts and other technicians to learn how different parts of the business worked.

The Culture
Really good group of interns, we went out every single week, and they're friends I hope to stay in touch with once I finish here!
City of London is incredibly expensive to go out in... £10 for a double mixer compared to the £2 I'm used to paying at uni! I lived at home in South East London so didn't have to pay rent.
Good nightlife but it was very expensive!
Charity events throguh work... Football for the guys...
