The Role
Some good design experience, but not enough time spent on site
Other members of my team apprreciated the work I helped them with and I built up a good relationship with them during the placement
Supervisor and line manager were both very approachable and worked with me to give me interesting a varied work experience
Work was a little sparse, so I was often scratching around for things to do
The design process didn't have much responsibility attached to it as most work was checked then approved within the team, however I did have some independant contact with the supply chain which held some responsibilty
I managed to learn how to use AutoCAD, which I had not previously used on a summer placement or ay university
The Company
Relaxed and friendly office
Found out about the placement location 3 weeks before I had to start, whilst on a 2 week holiday in the USA (We had been promised we'd find out before I went away). This meant I had 6 days to find accommodation, buy a car etc between getting back and starting the placement. No help was offered with finding accommodation either. Arrangements for the first day were good though and everything went smoothly in the end.
I have had no training this year, but I have been assigned a Supervising Civil Engineer to assist me with professional development
Having been sponsored throughout university, it seems like there are good job prospects
The Culture
The office was based on a business park, and noone lived nearby so there was no social scene.
Can't comment - lived at home
Can't comment - lived 1.5 hours away - Nottingham is a really good night out though!
There were a few oppertunities to get involved with work socials - paintballing etc.
