The Role
The work was varied and interesting. When i was asked to do something i was always reassured that i should only take on projects that I thought were worthwhile or useful to myself.
After most projects I was told that I had added value to the team.
I had clear outlines and guidance in the beginning but i was left to my devices quite a lot. Whilst this was a great way to learn there were times when more support would have been appropriate.
I had a good balance between work projects and opportunities to learn and get involved with other events.
I was told to 'make it my own' with two projects which was intimidating but getting good feedback on them was fantastic.
I want a career in Fundraising so my placement has taught me everything I need to know and shown me everything I need to do to achieve this.
The Company
I worked in an open plan office, and really felt like part of the team. Everybody in the organisation was friendly and willing to talk to me about what they did.
My Intern Manager was clear on how my internship worked and what was expected of me. The Internship Programme Manager was also on hand for any questions but was very organised from the start.
I was constantly reminded that I was there to take every opportunity I could. Nothing was held back from me. Even people from separate departments who had no vested interest in me allowed me to shadow them in order to learn more about the charity as a whole.
As soon as I finish my last year of University I will be applying to jobs at Cancer Research UK
The Culture
We were left mostly to our own devices in terms of meeting fellow interns and because of the open environment we actively communicated amongst ourselves and spent plenty of time outside of work together. I also spent spent plenty of time with colleagues in my department as they were all friendly and welcoming.
Living in london unpaid is extremely difficult. I was only able to do this because I had savings.
There was plenty to do after work in terms of pubs, bars and restaurants and they were all really nice but we would mostly head off by 9 as many people lived quite far away.
I didn't involved with much outside of work.
