The Role
Really good insight into 'real'engineering. Most jobs were based in the office, but plenty of oppotunities to go out and visit workshop floors, research centres, test beds and other UK sites if you make the most of it.
Generally a high level of respect from employees as you are given real tasks to help and improve the company, so the see you as doing an important job. Really nice atmosphere across whole company.
I was praised for the way I worked to produce a high quality output with a low level of guidance, but my supervisor was always more than happy to help with any issues/queries.
Plenty of work provided, and oppotunity to go beyond objectives and do more, as well as chance visit sites.
Organised own meetings and trips with people across company, managed own projects to meet deadlines and fed back periodically to managers. Also cool that you get to sign the official secrets act!!
Really useful to see the 'politics' of business and get a feel for engineering outside university in a leading company. grew in Organisation, influence, programme managment, as well as gaining materials and manufacturing knowledge.
The Company
Really nice people, happy to help with both work and providing advice about how to get the most out of the placment and career guidance.
Large company, so generally run very smoothly. One small issue when I applied with a communication mix up, but brilliant once here.
Lots of chance to gather experience, and subject days organised. Also an online teaching system with mandatory training courses, and a 1 day Holistic Gas Turbine Training Course.
Flexi Time
Sports and Social Club
Subsidised/Company Gym
Company Parties/Events
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
Very pleased with my work, and happy to offer me another internship, and a place on the Graduate Scheme once I finish university, subject to continued performance.
The Culture
I lived at home, whilst many were in halls together, but they seemed to have a great time, and I did get involved with activities like football/badminton after work and going out for meals etc.
Lived at home, so cannot comment (see above).

Rolls-Royce has a huge social side from archery to choirs. There was a football tournament organised for the interns as well as various events put on by the Apprentice/Grad Leisure Association.
