The Role
For my first placement, this allowed me to see a wide angle lens view of the industry and a great taster for civil engineering
All the other members of the team were very accommodating and friendly offering advice and involving me in group tasks
Guidance was good and the HQ staff also gave us tasks to learn about other aspects to industry we would not directly think about
Unfortunately, due to the Olympics and an embargo placed on the project, work was not continuous but still proved good fun
I was given free rein in the tasks assigned to me and did well in any work given although the responsibility for it was not high. This was fine considering it was a first year placement
I gained the required LUCAS card and CSCS card needed for London Undergound work and Construction site work respectively. Other learning was gained beyond the remit of my degree course.
The Company
Everyone was very friendly and talkative
The HR team got all relevant information out just in time, although being the first year for some aspects of the placement, there were a few niggles
they paid for the LUCAS and CSCS card and also emphasised the importance of site diaries and making records
As a sponsored student and following good results every year, I have a good prospect of employment
The Culture
Another student was there as well meaning we were learning together and from each other. We also went out with colleagues from the office to local pubs after work
Being in London for the project made living, travelling and socialising expensive.
It is a good nightlife, but can't say much more as it was pubs that were visited
London offers plenty of activities for every type of person
