The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed my placement. There were certain aspects that I think could have been handled differently, either by others or myself, although this helps to create an accurate impression of a working environment.
I was always encouraged throughout my placement, congratulated or thanked for helping out and tasks were explained to me in a wider context - i appreciated being told why i was asked to do something rather than just what to do.
The support I personally recieved was brilliant and consistent, although i'm aware of other interns who unfortunately did not share this experience.
Being able to manage my own work and schedule was very welcome coming out of university and it is one of the best skills I think a placement offers. It allows you to ask for more work if necessary or learn to negotiate / communicate with collegues should you feel you are being asked to do too much with too little time.
An effort was made to give interns responsibility, although I feel this could be improved a little.
The skills you pick up on placement, regardless of the subject of your work, will help you in many different ways - from communication, technical skills, working environments etc.
The Company
Quiet office but lovely people - felt comfortable and got work done but chats in between were always very pleasant.
Some organisation didn't seem especially well thought out in advance of the placement, but this is understandable given that one set of interns leaves as another enters. Some students I am aware had changes to managers and projects with some time during the transition where they felt a little under supported. My personal experience, however, was of a fairly organised placement.
There are lots of training opportunities that I believe were very valuable.
Company Parties/Events
Not a reflection on the company, but I personally would prefer to try another avenue before considering returning.
The Culture
Students got along very well, great community, although at times it felt as though the student community did not integrate especially well with permanent members of the company.
Fairly expensive, relative to previous experiences / areas
Lots of opportunities for different things
There were some opportunities, although not a huge variety.
