The Role
My desk was a true pleasure to work at. The work was incredibly varied, when I would not know what I would do on the day before coming to work. It was also challenging just in the right measure: not enough to bang my head against the wall, but enough to feel I was getting stretched and utilised my brains to the fullest.
On the grad level, there was a lot of camaraderie and just having fun together. In addition, I was given a lot of responsibility even on the live deals! The Vice-President / MD were not as cordial, but never arrogant/dismissive, just very busy!
The grad in my team, who I have been mostly in touch with, has been an amazing mentor and a very brilliant guy altogether. The others have also given me valuable lessons, including the recommendation to wear more formal shirts to work!
Never did I have to sit without a task (or more like 2-3) on my hands at any given time. I did have to come on the weekends once or twice, but in hindsight with more perseverance during the week it could have been avoided.
I got to work on many of the live deals my team were concocting. The documents I have helped put together have been used (of course, after multiple revisions) in pitching our ideas and products to clients, and some of the deals I have worked on closed with a positive outcome!
I gained a lot of product knowledge and general insight into the workings of the financial industry. However, my degree is not economics/finance-related, so there is no direct benefit. Nonetheless, understanding the industry will surely be beneficial for my well-roundedness as an individual.
The Company
Very chilled, and we did have a lot of fun on the floor even in the busier hours!
Good communication with all the involved parties, clear instructions as of where to be and where not to be.
We did not get a lot of dedicated training, although there was a lot of teaching on the desk!
Subsidised Canteen
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
The industry as a whole is not in the best of times, and I am still considering a PhD. Will have to have a very hard think if receive a full-time offer!
The Culture
The people were truly relaxed among my division's interns. None of the arrogant/stuck-up types.
In principle, living around Liverpool Street isn't the cheapest, although I was lucky in this respect. The bars/pubs aren't too cheap, but are probably typically priced for London.
Liverpool Street and the areas of Shoreditch/Old Street were always abuzz, any night of the week.
Cannot comment as have not investigated those opportunities. The interns have had a reasonably busy social life though!
