The Role
I really enjoyed working at Mars for my placement year. I was given many opportunities to shape my job role to what I wanted to do and was given many opportunities to try new activities with a wide range of projects.
I really felt part of the team from day one. Everyone was very friendly and helped me with my initial learning curve. I felt that the projects that I worked on throughout the year were valued by the team and had an impact after I left.
I had a lot of support and guidance given by my supervisor. We had an understanding to be honest about any issues/ problems and things we could do differently next time. This really helped me to feel comfortable in expressing any issues I was facing openly.
At the beginning I was not very busy as I was given time to get used to the Mars culture and learn about what the company/ team does. As I started to learn more and more about the company I was given a lot more responsibility and projects that kept me busy.
At the beginning of my placement I was not given much responsibility. I was given a couple of projects to act as a project manager but I was still being given a lot of support and guidance by my supervisor. After the first couple of months I felt more confident to take full responsibility for my projects.
I have definitely learnt a lot of new skills since working at Mars. I think my increased confidence and approach to networking and presenting will definitely help me when I return to university.
The Company
There has always been a positive atmosphere in the office and I had a lot of fun getting to know everyone in my team.
I think the placement was pretty well set up before I started my placement. An agenda was sent out for the first week so I knew exactly what to expect.
I was able to attend all of the courses that I wanted to that would help me within my role.
Subsidised Canteen
Sports and Social Club
International Travel
Company Parties/Events
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
It is very appealing about working for Mars in the future as part of a Graduate scheme.
The Culture
All of the students in my placement year were very social and enjoyed going out at weekends. As my placement was extended I have had the opportunity to socialise with the new placement students.
Cost of living was more expensive than a regular student house but still affordable considering we was all now working full time.
I would not want to go for a night out in Slough! But Windsor, Reading and London are not far for a good night out.
There are some opportunities to get involved in sports/ gym.
