The Role
The vacation scheme was enjoyable, pleasant and informative. There was a healthy balance of work, social events and training sessions to help an intern obtain a valuable insight into the profession, as well as the firm's working practices and culture.
From day one, I felt the staff made a genuine effort to treat me as one of their own. We often went down to the canteen together for lunch and never failed to ask whether I would like to come to any social events they were planning.
We were given a supervisor (junior associate) and a buddy (trainee). They were willing to answer any question I had and never made me feel silly for asking any of those questions. They were extremely supportive.
Over the three weeks, I found the work to be a little inconsistent. There were times when you were bored at your desk resisting the temptation to check your facebook, and other times when you felt a little overwhelmed with the amount of work you had to do.
Even though I was given some interesting work to do, I was not given a great deal of responsibility. However, the staff were always conscious of explaining how your work would fit in the bigger picture.
The training sessions the firm held were extremely helpful. They consisted of interactive one hour lectures of what each department within the firm do. We were also given a session on presentation skills which was insightful.
