The Role
Relaxed and friendly atmosphere, flexible working hours and real projects to work on.
I feel like I made a real contribution to the project I was working on.
Everyone was approachable, so there was never a lack of guidance, whether technical or otherwise.
I sometimes had to wait on actions from the client before I could carry on working, but I can't really blame Softwire for that.
As I mentioned above, I had as much responsibility as anyone on my team.
Although not directly applicable to my degree, the skills are transferable to any other job in software.
The Company
Hour and a half long Playstation breaks at lunch, plus a pool table, table football and darts board meant there was never a lack of things to do. The endless free snacks were also a nice bonus.
I was lucky in that after working on an internal project for two weeks I had a real project to move straight on to.
Thanks to the Softwire "Year of Technical Excellence" (YoTE for short) there were a few activities/initiatives geared towards this very purpose, like the weekly "lunch and learn"s, where free lunch was provided in exchange for going a presentation by another employee on some topic of their choosing.

Although I'm not looking for a job right now, I'll definitely be considering it in the future.
The Culture
I started at the same time as four other interns, and we were all on the same team initially. This (along with "new starter drinks") helped to foster a nice friendly atmosphere between the new starters
It is in London, but not extraordinarily expensive. A pint of beer is around £3.50-£4
Company social events (or just after work gatherings) often ended up in the local pub (the Junction) followed by food and a suspicious looking, but interesting bar.
Drum lessons, a cycle ride from bristol to london, hackathons, computer games evenings, a conference in Munich, the annual picnic and the quarterly company meeting (complete with food and drink) are just a few examples of activities that fly around the internal mailing lists daily. Along with frequent trips to the pub after work (or at lunch)
