The Role
I enjoyed how practical the placement year was. Obviously, it was difficult at first because of how practical it was in an industrious area. But, after I had become used to working in that environment it became a lot easier.
At first it was hard to get involved in things that were going on due to my lack of industrial experience. However, as the year got on I found myself ionvolved in more and more. Colleagues didn't hasitate to ask me if I could give them a hand
The priority of the company is to produce stainless steel. Therefore, all engineering work had to be planned around production.
At first I was more of a helping hand. Once I became more competent I was responsible for the maintaining of certain areas of plant.
I don't think you can get this level of practical and industrial experience in university. All the experince I have gained will be very useful when it comes any project work as I will be a lot more specific when it comes to design.
The Company
We all had our own desk with low dividers, so there was always someone to talk to. When you are out on site there are plenty of people out there to meet and talk to.
There wasn't much of a set format for how the placement went. If you want to get involved you have to put yourself out there and say that you want to be involved.
The main thing that I think has developed me is the amount of practical, industrial work experience I have gained. The company has also let me train for my working at heights and my permit course. The permit course allows me to give the ok for any contractors who want to work on site.
Company Parties/Events
Above 25 days holiday
The company is very good for anyone looking for practical work, but there isn't much theory work.
The Culture
I got on well with the other engineering placement students, but didn't see much of any other placement students in different fields.
I lived in Doncaster and drove to work everyday. It was a little bit more difficult to socialise. But, if you lived in Sheffield it would be relatively cheap as it is a student city.
Sheffield is a great socialising city with many new developments completed and more to come.
The only activity was when collegues went out on the town.
