The Role
My placement gave me a real insight into Government employment and the kind of work that I would be undertaking if I applied for a Graduate position. I gained skills and experience that will really help me when looking for employment after University
For the most part, colleagues were friendly and keen to help. I felt like an equal member of the department I was in and was kept informed of everything that could have an impact on the sort of work I'd be doing.
Overall, I received support and guidance on work that I was asked to complete. Occasionally I would have to ask for further guidance which was always given.
The nature of the role I had meant that some weeks would be very busy as I had several pieces of work to complete, whereas other weeks would be slow-going.
I was given responsibility for a number tasks on placement and was treated the same as any other colleague. I was in regular contact with colleagues both in Leeds and London, and communicated with the NHS every week.
I gained really valuable skills whilst on placement, the most important being transferable skills both back to University and into a career, such as leadership, problem-solving and time management.
The Company
Everyone in my team got on really well. New colleagues took very little time to settle in.
My manager was away for the first two weeks of my placement, but another colleague was in place to supervise me during their absence. Opportunities were available for all students to develop a variety of skills, including presentation skills.
A training allowance was available but I never attended any external courses.
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
Sports and Social Club
Subsidised/Company Gym
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
Above 25 days holiday
Healthcare from home
I plan to apply for the Graduate programmes that are in place.
The Culture
A trip to the local pub with colleagues took place every month or so and I often went out for lunch with other students.
Leeds is reasonable for living and socialising. There are plenty of student houses available.
There are lots of good pubs and cocktail bars in Leeds.
I was often sent emails regarding outside activities and there are lots of clubs that you can join through through HASSRA.
