The Role
I enjoyed every minute of my internship at Barclays. I had such a variety of experiences: my day to day job role; a marketing conference targeting the next generation of new joiners; I met at least one person from every member of the bank; a female networking breakfast... Barclays have an initiative where interns have to meet a certain number of managing directors and directors which exposes one to colleagues from across the board. If you make the most of these meetings, you will have a fantastic network of senior bankers able to provide you with advice as you begin your career.
By the third day I felt like a true part of my team which was fantastic! My manager ensured I was very involved from the outset and my buddy provided invaluable on the job training. Furthermore, every member of the team was willing to help me out at any given time.
My manager and I had a detailed one-to-one on my first day outlining my schedule for the first week. This was very useful as it eased me into my job role from which I could then plan my own schedule for the remainder of the internship.
Because I was on a line role I was incredibly busy every single day. However, because of the fantastic training I had received at the start of my internship and continued to receive throughout, I was able to manage the high volume.
The amount of responsibility I was given was fantastic and really made me feel a part of the team as I was contributing as much as every other permanent employee.
As I succeeded into getting onto the Barclays graduate scheme for 2013, the training I received will greatly assist me!!
The Company
Fantastic. We were all working hard and as a team (sharing work load to make sure everyone had roughly the same amount) but I feel like there was a fun atmosphere as well where true friendships developed.
There was at least one extracurricular activity every single week to ensure networking with fellow interns. The mid term social and volunteering were real highlights.
Before the internship we had to complete a set amount of relevant online modules. In addition to this was a weekend of financial training and soft skills training, which provided a great deal of teaching, something I found particularly useful as my degree is not finance-related.

Fantastic as I am on the 2013 graduate programme and cannot wait to work there!!
The Culture
The social events allowed for many opportunities to make new friends and every Thursday night interns in my division would get together. I can honestly say that I made some great friends over the internship which is an added bonus!
Everywhere in London - especially Canary Wharf - is expensive but this wasn't a surprise!!
A fellow intern and I have since been back after the internship as we missed our favourite bar so much!!
There are many sports clubs and networks. The networks I got involved in were the cultural awareness network and the women's network. I also went running with my manager and buddy.
