The Role
The internship experience itself was not unenjoyable, but I found the work that I was doing uninspiring.
Everyone was friendly and willing to help when I asked for it. Sometimes a certain amount of knowledge was assumed, which left me a bit confused.
I felt like my advisors were not iving me the Ernst & young hard-sell but really wanted to help with my development. However I had no contact with either of my senior managers, for various reasons.
Highly varied, often busy doing monotonous boring stuff. Other times I had nothing to do.
Given the technical nature of the work experience I could only have limited responsibility. That said, I did feel at times like the work I was doing (as simple as it was) was essential for meeting certain deadlines and in that respect I was in part responsible for the outcome of the entire project.
In my degree studies very little, other than in the fact that it has focused my mind on the importance of achieving a good grade at university, so as to give me a greater choice in where I work afterwards. Given that I have decided that a career in professional services is not for me, the technical skills I learned won't benefit me much. I definitely learned and honed other 'soft skills' whilst at University and that will undoubtedly benefit me in whatever I decide to do after university.
The Company
The work was dull, but the people were always lively and generally made the best of the situation. However lots of the people I worked with told me that they did not particularly enjoy the work they did and were not sure how they had ended up doing it for so long. Many others saw it as a stepping stone to other jobs, or as a means of getting a qualification.
No complaints, other than the fact that I had little contact time with my managers, this was just due to the fact that one had his leave booked while I was there.
If we wanted it the interns could always speak to someone, who would advise them and talk the them about their own development. Each of us had a development plan which was discussed at the beginning of our placement and we had to try and hit our targets by the end. We were also given lots of feedback on the work we did which was useful.

Got offered a job, but unfortunately it was not for me.
The Culture
Yes, there were social events organised by EY, and also social events organised by the interns. I made some good friends while I was there.
London is expensive, but all EY events were heavily subsidised which made socialising on these occasions cheaper.
It's London baby! Great.
Given it was a 5 week placement there was lots of activities made available including a CSR day at the end which involved doing some work at an Eco-Park, which I was dreading but actually had a very good time. There was also a black tie event, and a departmental 'fun day' playing softball.
