The Role
Most of the work was challenging, the people were all fantastic and the project itself was very interesting.
Everybody had time to answer questions and to discuss how things were going. It was easy to feel part of the team and to be involved.
My line manager was very supportive through out my placement and very approachable so it wasn't difficult to seek guidance unless hectic schedules meant I didn't see him all day. This often encouraged more independent work though so was not a negative really.
Sometimes due to delays on site, there would be a lull but there were many occasions where I needed to cover site and had a large amount of office based work to balance. A really busy schedule actually led to better time management as there was more pressure to complete work.
Often I was the only one working on some of my tasks which meant I was responsible for the outcomes but there were always people to discuss difficult and complex work with. I was able to take on more responsibilities as time went on and I became more confident in my role.
Much of my studies involve project work that uses the teamwork, communication and other such skills which have all been developed during the placement. Seeing the theory from our lectures being used on site and in the project office has improved understanding of many different areas.
The Company
When everyone was around, the atmosphere was friendly and buzzing but still professional making it an easy place to work.
The company's training and talent team have put together very useful and structured programmes and guidance booklets. There is always someone available to offer support and guidance and my line manager was well aware of what was expected when. Plenty of information was available for the placement.
The summer placements themselves are structured in order to ensure that students aim to achieve objectives and therefore develop personally and in line with company policy.
Future employment with this company would be ideal and the prospects for career development and achieving professional status with this company are very appealing.
The Culture
Plenty of like minded people on the project and a good group to go out for drinks with. The location of the main office made it a bit more difficult to spontaneously go out for drinks though as most people needed to catch certain trains home.
Project was in London - enough said!
Main office was not in the best part of town but excellent transport links meant the centre of London was only 20 minutes away.
Not so much unless you are there for longer or didn't need to commute very far.
