    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I felt that my work was high impact. I was able to work with some fantastic people and was given the opportunity to become a subject matter expert very quickly. The internship felt like a full time job as opposed to a year out from University.

    5/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I feel that I was a very valued member of the team, through project work I would be given autonomous tasks that I led, as well as often being asked for input where required.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • The managerial support that was available to me for the first 9 months of my internship was brilliant, at times I felt that immediate support from my manager was not present during my final months, however I knew that I could rely on my peers and managers higher up in the organisation – something I certainly utilised. Because of this, I do not feel that I missed out on any support.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Because of the project work that I had worked on, I was often given tight deadlines and I had to flex priorities consistently. I feel that my time at Home Lending was certainly put to good use and that my potential was realised.

    5/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I became a subject matter expert very quickly in my team. As a result of this, I was given high impact deliverables and was able to bring my own ideas to the table. Throughout the year I sought opportunities to gain exposure to senior leaders of the business, including a presentation to the CFO and FLT.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Although the skills that I have learnt over the year are not directly applicable to my University studies, they can certainly be taken as life skills into any future employment. I feel that my technical, organisational and professional skills will be of great use to me in the future.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • One of the greatest assets to this business is the individuals that make it. The team work ethic is great; everyone is extremely supportive and the work is always balanced with fun.

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Because of the number of years the company has been employing interns, they know exactly what they are doing. All of the managers get the perfect balance between nurturing and stretching you to meet your objectives. The relationships you build with HR are fantastic and the intern HR representative is always there for you.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • From my experience this year, it is evident that Home Lending invests a great deal in their individuals. I have been on 3 training courses which I have benefitted from, as well as being exposed to senior leaders of the business. Due to the on-going support that is available across the business, questions are always welcomed with open arms. This has resulted in the opportunity to learn about the rest of the business as well as your immediate work.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I have thoroughly enjoyed my year at GE. The culture here is exactly what I am looking for; I have developed a great deal over the year and feel that if I can continue to do this I would be set up for a successful career. I have already been successful in applying for the companies graduate program - a great feeling going into my final year at university!

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • The intern community was great, because of GE’s selection process I feel that all of the interns that the company recruits are energetic and good fun to be around. We would go out together most weekends.

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Very reasonable – you felt the benefit of living close to London without the price!

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Watford was perfect for a cheap and cheerful night out with some decent bars, clubs and restaurants. For more glamorous evenings London is only a 20 minute train away, the world is your oyster!

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • I joined a tennis club and got involved in weekly Hockey at a local club.
