The Role
I was seconded over to Shrewsbury Town Council and thoroughly enjoyed my placement. It was varied and interesting and gave me a taste of all aspects of a parish/town council operations.
Was valued and given responsibility from a very early stage.
The office environment offered support and guidance from all members of staff who were more than happy to help with any queries.
Sometimes there was not much work to do as an intern however there was plenty of reading/research to undertake in the low points of work load.
I was given responsibility for a few very large projects early on.
My first insight into local government. It gave me a taste of what its like to work for a council and the kind of things that they are responsible for on a day to day basis.
The Company
Always a generally light hearted atmosphere with a good team spirit.
Very good communication between Shropshire Council (the organisers) and Shrewsbury Town Council who I was seconded over too.
Shrewsbury Town Council offered a qualification in local government studies.
Got offered a permanent role at the end of the internship.
The Culture
Two interns were seconded to the Town Council and lunches were a regular occurance! The other interns at Shropshire Council had regular nights out.
The cost of living is relatively low compared to a city.
Shrewsbury has a good night life. Particularly on a Wednesday which is student night.
A few nights out and BBQs were organised by other interns and graduates
