The Role
The internship was very challenging and rewarding; I was thrown into the deep end right away working alongside a consultant the Council have hired for disposing of their assets. It was a great insight to see how a public sector organisation is run on a daily basis and has led to me achieving a full time position at the Council.
My office colleagues made me feel welcome straight away and were very helpful with any problems that arose. It did take a while to get the same response from some colleagues in other parts of the organisation who viewed you as 'only an intern'.
I was lucky enough to have a group and line manager who were extremely supportive and approachable. I was given a graduate buddy who I could arrange to meet at any time and gave excellent advice on applications/presentations etc.
I always had something to do; I was extremely busy working on a property auction the Council had arranged, working with colleagues across the organization, outside agents and members of the public.
I was given a high level of responsibility; I ended the internship being trusted with starting to dispose of small assets the Council wish to sell.
I was able to use the property skills I learnt at university (leases, valuation etc) on a daily basis. If I did have to return to university after the internship I would be more aware of how an organization such as local government deals with property.
The Company
There were some office politics between some colleagues but overall it was enjoyable.
The interview was very professional and the feedback given excellent. The contract you are given could have been sent out quicker.
No specific training, although I learnt a great deal working alongside many different skilled colleagues.
Flexi Time
Company Parties/Events
The internship is an excellent stepping stone onto the graduate programme, which I was fortunate to be placed onto. Nearly all of the interns who were not successful on the grad scheme have found employment in the organisation
The Culture
I struggled to attend social events as I live out of Shrewsbury, but the interns who moved to the town had a regular social scene. More could have been done to organise events during and out of work.
N/A
I live locally and regularly go out in Shrewsbury. Nightlife varies but overall it is pretty good!
Not many events were set up for outside of work, although efforts were made by fellow interns.
