The Role
The vacation scheme was fantastic. I spent a week in a department that I had requested and a week in another that I had not considered but each gave me the opportunity to do quality work with excellent supervisors and colleagues. The work was challenging but I felt supported and received lots of feedback to help improve my work.
Everyone, from partners to secretaries, was really friendly with no one too busy to answer my questions. I felt part of the firm from day 1.
Support and guidance was on going through each week and there was a more formal feedback session at the end of each week which was really useful.
My workload was monitored carefully and while I had several tasks to manage at points, there was never too much or too little work.
I did not have a great deal of responsibility and some of the work that I did was clearly to test my understanding and skills rather than being billable work, but in the assessment context this was understandable. I did have the opportunity to draft witness statements for a live matter.
The balance of work types and exposure to different areas of practice will certainly help when studying my LPC.
The Company
The office was very friendly and very busy. The atmosphere was professional and helpful and it wa a nice environment to be in for 2 weeks.
The placement was very organised and I had details of the dates, times and assessors involved with the assessments on the first day. I was also involved in team meetings and business development activities and this enabled me to get a broader understanding of the firm and its strategy.
The training and development that took place was very much 'on the job' and through supervision but this was very useful and I left with a far greater knowledge of the 2 areas that I had when I arrived.
Sports and Social Club
Company Parties/Events
I have been offered a training contract to start in 2014.
The Culture
We had a Vacation Scheme social night out with the trainees which involved a visit to Revolution for a cocktail making masterclass which was great fun.
Plymouth is certainly a cheaper alternative to Bristol or London.
There are lots of restaurants and bars, particularly around the Barbican and the Royal William Yard
There were no opportunities during my two week Vacation Scheme.
