The Role
I really enjoyed the placement as I felt I was given real responsibility and that my thoughts/comments were valued. The only tiny downside was that I wasn't able to attend any client meetings but that was just due to circumstance. Everybody was very friendly and made me feel welcome and part of the team, even though I was only there for a short time.
Both departments made me feel very welcome and took the time to get to know me. I was also able to attend a lunch with members of the firm so that made me feel very welcome.
In both departments my supervisor constantly checked I was getting on ok and had enough to do. They emphasised that I could ask questions any time and I felt like I could disturb them to ask even minor questions. My buddy was excellent and checked in many times and other trainees also approached me to talk and answer any questions I had.
I always had a piece of work to get on with and was never sat twiddling my thumbs or stressing out due to too much work. It was well managed.
I was surprised by some of the responsibility I was given, for example in being asked to provide an intitial mark up of a document that my supervisor then used. Even smaller tasks such as being asked to write an attendance note felt like a good level of responsibility as it was my job to ensure the teleconference meeting was fairly reflected.
I woudln't go as far as to say I learnt important skills during the two week placement that will assist in my legal studies, which is no comment on the firm as this wasn't the purpose of the placement. However, I would say that I learnt a lot about the culture of the firm which consequently assisted me in deciding which law firm to join.
The Company
It was very friendly and collegial whilst also professional. It was clear everyone was working hard, but people still took the time to get to know me.
It was very well organised and I cannot think of any organisational improvements that need to be made.
I think just by offering the placement I felt that the firm were investing in me and showing that they thought I had potential to join the firm.
Subsidised Canteen
Company Parties/Events
I was offered a training contract as a result of the placement.
The Culture
I wouldn't say there was a good social element with the other placement students, but the current trainees were very welcoming and we went for drinks one evening.
Very cheap compared to London. Plus, the firm paid for the cost of my hotel which was very generous and helpful.
Not applicable. Had I explored the nightlife I perhaps wouldn't have been offered a job.
There wasn't the opportunity whilst I was on placement, however I was aware that opportunities were coming up, and that a previous set of placement students had had an opportunity to go to another office.
