The Role
The work was really interesting and people were friendly
People were friendly and chatted to me at lunchtime, and I felt like the work I was doing was genuinely useful.
We had weekly status meetings to check how things were going and discuss problems I'd found or questions I had, as well as day-to-day discussion when needed.
The first few days I was mostly reading a lot of stuff (necessary but hard to take it all in), but after that I was busy doing actual work. Occasionally I had multiple tasks to be doing simultaneously and wasn't sure which I was meant to do first, but this was always clarified when I asked.
I was mostly left to get on with the task, but was always clear on who to ask if I got stuck.
When I started I had barely done any programming. I learnt enough Perl to complete the work I was given, and bits of Java and Unix shell script as well. This was very helpful for deciding that I do want to work in this area in the future, and the thought process of how to write code, and practice at picking up a language from scratch was very useful.
The Company
It was fairly quiet, but people chatted and joked at times, and I was encouraged multiple times to talk to people more about stuff other than work!
Very well - we were found nice accommodation fairly close to the office, which was greatly subsidised. I was given enough information before I arrived not to be too confused/scared, and I wasn't ever sat around waiting for something to happen.
I was encouraged to spend some time looking at Java even though it wasn't really required for the work I was doing, because it was more modern/more generally useful than the language I was doing my work in.
Financial Bonus
I had an interview at the end of my internship, but didn't get a job in the end.
The Culture
We all went to the pub each time someone started work or left the office. Because we were a smaller office, there were only 3 interns, so there wasn't much social scene (although I was fairly happy with this).
I was in the Coventry office, and things weren't too expensive.
Nightlife? Didn't really test it.
I think some of the office played football together sometimes.
