The Role
The work was very engaging and gave me a good insight into the sector.
Living with other interns in the company houses helped to build a strong rapport among us, and afterwork drinks/lunchtime sport etc made us feel at home with the other workers.
My manager was always available on the floor to talk over the work I was doing, although I was a little slow to begin as I struggled to get help on the programming language and packages I was using.
Generally left to work at own rate, with regular meetings and feedback from manager. Never felt overworked, but never felt bored.
Although not in a particularly high-risk or high-pressure environment, it was clear that the projects interns worked on were very valuable to the company, and not just exercises set for the point of providing work for us to do.
Computer programming forms only a small part of my degree, but whether or not I end up in this sector I feel the skills I have learnt will be incredibly useful, directly or indirectly.
The Company
Frequent events such as lunchtime sport and afterwork drinks gave a good rapport among staff.
I never felt there was a poorly organised element. Details of food, accommodation and attractions in the local area as well as work itself were all made very clear from the start.
A lot of effort was made to train interns, especially in the first few weeks.
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
Sports and Social Club
Financial Bonus
Company Parties/Events
Definitely a great company to work for, and definitely an interesting sector to work in.
The Culture
Living in company houses helped us get to know eachother, and we all got on really well together.
Not central-London prices, but not incredibly cheap. Nearby pubs tended to have quite good deals (e.g. £5 for a lunch)
Not really a big party place locally, but there were nice pubs about and there was reasonable transport into the centre of London.
Mainly lunchtime sports and after-work pub visits (including company tab!)
