The Role
Gained valuable experience from the job, but social aspect was very poor
I felt very valued as an employee, and felt more like a full-time employee than a student
I gained valuable skills, but after a while it felt like I was just there to do the job as I would have been cheaper than a full time employee
Very varied due to the nature of the role. Some days I was incredibly busy, whereas other days I had no workload and even after trying I wasn't given many other opportunities. It would have been nice to explore other roles within the organisation during these quiet periods.
I was given a great deal of responsibility, and had ample opportunity to prove I could work independently.
I feel a lot more prepared for the world of work. However, I feel that I only developed skills that enabled me to do my job. The organisation didn't provide me with any opportunity for further development.
The Company
Due to the organisation of the floor, employees had little interaction with others outside of their < 5 man teams. The office floor was very quiet and people mostly worked independently. Positive atmosphere was definitely lacking.
Felt more like a full-time job than a work placement. Which is great in one aspect as you gain great responsibility, but it needed more emphasis in building our character development to encourage us to return after graduation. It seems Xerox are content with hiring cheap labour (sandwich placements) to do the mundane jobs and replacing them each year. Little to no graduates return to the organisation.
I have definitely developed whilst working at Xerox, but I feel that I was only being trained to do my specific job role for the year - no development to make me a more versatile employee and return after graduation.
I have no incentive to return to Xerox after graduation, even though I enjoyed working within my team. I feel that I had gained all of the benefits of working at Xerox within the first 4 months and there would be little prospects for further development or promotion opportunities.
The Culture
The social scene was fairly poor, but this was more due to the location being in Uxbridge than the fault of the students. There is little to do in Uxbridge, the best alternative would be travelling into Central London but the night bus home takes 2-3 hours.
Living in Uxbridge was fairly expensive due to the rent, and not much opportunity for socialising.
There is a couple of pubs and a liquid nightclub. That is all.
There were no opportunities as far as I am aware.
